“Working Safely” Workshops for the Workforce

Background

During 2001, we launched the Safety Propulsion projects: Enhanced Site Supervision (ESS), HSE Advisers Competency programme and Drive to Survive (DtS). These have made significant impact on our HSE performance. Nevertheless we continue to incur unacceptably high rates of injury. Most injuries are to workers at the shop-floor level, for whom we have now developed an ESS-type package, “Working Safely” (WS).

On 23rd July, the WS Package was presented at a train-the-trainer forum to a broad cross-section of our contractor community. At the end of the forum, all contractors present made a commitment to run WS workshops in-house, with the target that all members of their workforce will attend the workshops by end 2002. The workshop will take between 2 to 3 hours, and it is targeted at contractor workers in the interior, and PDO staff who were not covered by the ESS scheme.

To ensure active participation of staff, the workshops are best run in small groups (between 10 and 15 workers). It is recommended that each contractor holds a train-the-trainer session for those line staff who will deliver the package.
