PDO’s mission is to explore and develop oil & gas in a sustainable manner to the benefit of all stakeholders.

We aim to:
- Improve awareness and understanding of Sustainable Development
- Integrate Sustainable Development in our business process
- Establish an effective stakeholders’ engagement management system
- Be transparent in reporting on Sustainable Development

What does sustainable development mean? The main and most used definition of sustainable development was written in 1987 by the Brundtland commission and it stated that sustainable development is “the development which meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs." The Brundtland Comission also identified three elements which they said have to be in balance in order to guarantee sustainable development. The three elements, also known as the ‘three pillars’ of sustainable development are: People, Planet and Profit. In other words, the drive for economic prosperity (Profit) must not outweigh the prudent management of the environment (Planet), nor must it be at the expense of members of society (People), which includes staff and communities. In other words all of the three elements have to be taken into consideration at the same time. That is why PDO has devised 6 sustainable development principles based on the three elements.

PLANET
1. Protect the environment
2. Manage resources efficiently

PEOPLE
3. Respect and safeguard people
4. Work with stakeholders

PROFIT
5. Generate profitability
6. Benefit communities

6 Sustainable development principles in more detail

PDO is committed to continual improvement in Sustainable Development. Examples of PDO’s efforts in Sustainable Development can be found under the links Economic Performance, Social Performance and Environmental Performance. These sorts of initiatives have become part of the way PDO does business. They are simple concepts, but are also absolutely essential to PDO’s future

Sustainable Development in Oman
Sustainable development has been part of several initiatives in the Sultanate. The most important of these are:

The Government’s Vision 2020:

  • Development of human resources and the upgrading of skills and competence
  • Effective interface between government and private sector
  • Optimal use of natural resources
  • Economic diversification
  • Development shared by all citizens
  • Preservation of achievements

The Royal Decree 10-82, on Environmental Protection, was also the subject of a proposed revision by the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Environment. This took into account many of the elements of sustainable development, specifically:

  • Oman’s natural resources and their optimum development
  • Improvement of natural resources for current and future generations

Furthermore, His Majesty reinforced this policy in his speech on the 29th National Day, 19 November 1999: "The diversification of the economy, the development of human skills, the effective exploitation of available natural resources and the creation of suitable conditions to encourage the private sector to perform a greater role in the growth of the national economy, all this will lessen our dependence on oil. We must not forget that oil is a finite resource, with its price at the mercy of external circumstances beyond local control."
