Knee Injury (LTI 23 of 2006)
On 6th May 2006 at around 18:00 in the KGP vehicle workshop, while a mechanic was hammering on the teeth cap to remove it from the shovel bucket, metal chip from the right edge of the teeth cap flew and entered through skin of his left lower limb. The injured person was immediately attended by the site male nurse. He was then referred to Adam Hospital for further examination. He was then shifted to Nizwa Hospital where he underwent minor knee surgery. Due to the nature of the injury the incident was classified as an LTI.
  • Hitting the cap on the side.
  • Check the hammer¿s surface before use.
  • Check that the hammer ¿head¿ is fixed tight with the handle and that the handle is in good shape
  • Check the surface you want to strike the hammer with before you start the job.
  • Use safe tools to remove the pin.
  • Stay on safe side and avoid moving forward object.
  • Check the stability of the ground.
  • Ensure the other person is safe from the hazard of moving hammer.
  • Use the agreed PPE all the time.
  • Flying object hazard not identified for this specific activity
  • No HEMP specific for removal of teeth cap from the teeth of the shovel bucket
  • Teeth cap can only be removed by hammering due to the accumulation of hard mud in between the surfaces
